Art, Soul, and Sanctuary: The Hemingways Eden Residence Experience

Words by Yvonne C Mtengwa

Nairobi, if experienced intentionally, will capture your soul. It is a city defined by a fierce, magnetic momentum, a fast-evolving, traffic laden metropolis where the raising brick and mortar of modern ambition stands side-by-side with deep-rooted cultural heritage.

In brief: Hemingways Eden Residence is a nine-key boutique stay in Nairobi’s leafy Lang’ata area, on the border of the indigenous Giraffe Sanctuary Forest. Built in 1992 as the family home of artist and filmmaker Tonio Trzebinski and fashion designer Anna Trzebinski, it is now part of the Hemingways Collection, with rooms across the Main House, the Studio and the Cottage.

Nairobi doesn’t just grow; it pulses. It is a brilliant, yet somewhat of a chaotic tapestry woven from an incredible diversity of people, places, and attractions. It moves at a pace that is both exhilarating and unapologetically bold and is always exciting for me to explore with each visit.

For me, travel has over the years evolved into more of an intentional exercise. While I enjoy navigating most of Africa’s urban dynamos, the true luxury of exploration lies in finding the exact point where that electric energy yields to a quiet, soulful decompression. Travel in every sense, is not only about meeting the key objectives for each trip, but an opportunity to reconnect with the very essence of what creates an authentic perspective in how I choose to live my life.

Arriving at Hemingways Eden Residence in Lang’ata

With my transfer arranged to pick me up from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the shift from reading over my itinerary and mentally mapping the days ahead, happened when we left the highway, driving through the leafy, historic avenues of Lang’ata. This part of Nairobi was new to me and felt a little like this area is where the city sheds its standard corporate skin and embraces something deeply creative and profoundly personal.

And tucked quietly away on the border of the indigenous Giraffe Sanctuary Forest, Hemingways Eden Residence doesn’t simply offer a place to rest your head; it invites you into a living, breathing canvas of nature colliding with art inspired by the East African cultural narrative.

A Sanctuary Sculpted by Creative Legacy

Originally built in 1992 as a private sanctuary and family home by celebrated artist and filmmaker Tonio Trzebinski and his fashion designer wife Anna Trzebinski, this boutique jewel has beautifully transitioned to become a part of the Hemingways Collection, while fiercely guarding its bohemian soul.

As I walked through the doors of the main house, which is where my ensuite bedroom was set upstairs, my eyes darted about the tables and walls, which boasted a gallery-like appeal to how design, decor and art were thoughtfully presented. The home presents not as a hotel, but as an ongoing story, where the walls serve as a dynamic canvas for Tonio’s striking, large-scale expressionist paintings, juxtaposed with an intimate collection of artifacts, tactile textiles, and sculptures gathered across decades of African travel.

The genius of Eden lies in its scale. For guests looking to experience a stay here, you will note what I would best describe as a hyper-personalized world comprised of just nine uniquely designed keys, split across three architectural expressions:

  • The Main House: A nostalgic tribute to classic African homestead architecture. It welcomes you with deeply polished wooden elements, a grand open-plan drawing room, and open stone fireplaces that soften the crisp Nairobi evenings, leading out to a magnificent veranda.
  • The Studio: Tucked beside the residence, this space injects a vibrant, eclectic energy into the estate. It houses open-plan spaces, colourful ensuite bedrooms, and light-drenched lofts designed specifically to spark the creative spirit.
  • The Cottage: A completely secluded, self-contained haven featuring its own private terrace and kitchenette, engineered for those seeking absolute anonymity and undisturbed quietude.

The Art of Mindful Well-Being

Upon further exploration of Hemingways Eden Residence during my two-night retreat, I discovered that wellness is not presented as a clinical treatment menu or a scheduled hour in what are often sterile spas. Instead, it is woven into the very fabric of your daily rhythm. From the moment I checked in, to my gourmet meals savoured from The Deck, which overlooks the Giraffe Sanctuary Forest, moments were an organic invitation to slow down. Time seemingly slows down as the property treats tranquility as a luxury discipline.

True restoration here is found in the stillness of the estate. It is the ritual of a slow forest walk along the woodland borders, feeling the cool forest air beneath the ancient canopy. It is the meditative act of sitting in the Artisanal Gallery or joining a creative workshop upon request to channel your own thoughts into form. Wellness is the transition from the high-octane energy of the city to the soothing auditory environment of the grounds, where your evening soundtrack is reduced to the rustle of leaves, the twilight symphony of birds, and the remarkable lighting at The Deck.

A Curated Lens on the Capital

While you may find this difficult to do by virtue of the sheer comfort that surrounds you, should you choose to step outside this creative cocoon, Hemingways Eden Residence positions you beautifully to experience Nairobi’s sophisticated cultural evolution. Rather than standard tourist routes, the property acts as an insider conduit to the neighborhood’s most intentional landmarks.

During my stay, I was blessed with a curated itinerary which made exploration effortless. My first morning was spent at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where visitors to this popular attraction were immersed in the feeding of orphan elephants and a singular baby rhino and zebra. The afternoon took me to the nearby Giraffe Centre before closing the day out with a history-infused tour of the Karen Blixen Museum.

For the contemporary traveller, I’d go as far as saying the Residence also serves as a launchpad into Nairobi’s thriving design scene, offering curated access to high-end local shopping boutiques and cultural hubs. It even provides an unexpectedly seamless gateway for a day safari into Nairobi National Park, proving that in this city, the wilderness is never truly far away.

The Slow Travel Philosophy at Hemingways Eden Residence

As my stay drew to a close, I realized the magic of Hemingways Eden rests entirely in how it reclaimed for me, given the largely hectic nature of my day-to-day life. My mornings here were deliberately unrushed, beginning with a flawlessly brewed cup of Kenyan coffee at The Deck. My days included guided tours of the city with a member of the team, complete with being shuttled around in a luxury Hemingways branded vehicle fully equipped with WIFI access. My evenings were spent first by the bonfire, where I particularly enjoyed my interaction with two Masai gentlemen that took guests through moments of learning their traditional dances, values, traditions, and symbolism of their red coloured garb.

And what’s not to love about concluding each night with a hyper-local, candlelit dinner that honours fresh locally sourced ingredients. I was even so privileged to share deep conversations by the crackling fire as well as witness a proposal between two guests who had earlier joined in on the immersive cultural experience with the Masai.

If it is connecting with local art, basking in the soul of curated spaces or calling time out to truly enjoy recalibration in a sanctuary surrounded by the pulse of a city, then Hemingways Eden Residence will offer you an experience that’s engineered for the traveller who understands that the ultimate luxury isn’t just about where you go, but about how you continue to evolve when you carve out time to slow down a little.
