In my line of work as a travel writer and PR strategist, I am frequently reminded of what an awesome privilege it is to periodically trade the bustling, high-vibrational rooms of my industry for the sacred, untamed rooms of the wild. To veer off the paved paths of Dubai’s concrete jungle and seemingly endless task lists, to making my way into the profound stillness of the African bush never gets old. It had been going on 13 years since I was last navigated the streets of Lusaka, and so I couldn’t wait to see what changes had emerged since years as a resident of the Zambian capital.

We arrived at Ila by road transfer. Stepping out of the game viewer and onto the property, your eye is immediately drawn to the central boma. This structure is an architectural masterpiece that effortlessly fuses contemporary African design with structural ingenuity.

The showpiece of the camp is its grand slightly winding, elevated ramp, which leads you to the woven main boma. The design is a stunning tribute to local heritage that pushes the boundaries of green architecture. Rather than relying on commercial, high-impact materials, the entire space was meticulously crafted using sustainably sourced African bamboo, wood, and thousands of sand-coloured bricks and canvas.

The main camps open-air spaces seamlessly blend the indoors with the out, directing all focus toward a rim-flow infinity pool that seems to spill directly into the river below. It is a social heart that understands the balance between the “stay” and the “experience,” where gathering around the firepit for your morning pre-game drive coffee or enjoying farm-to-table cuisine during the day feels deeply connected to the earth.

The Riverside Tents: Your Sanctuary for Recalibration

The commitment to low-impact, high-aesthetic design extends beautifully into the lodge’s luxury tented suites. Strung gently along the riverbank between mature Ilala palms and towering indigenous trees, each tent has been individually positioned to honour the existing flora, ensuring that the natural topography remains completely uncompromised.

Elevated on wooden walkways that hover above the earth, these canvas-and-timber sanctuaries offer an intimate, front-row seat to the river’s daily theatre. The interiors are a polished canvas of chic, modern African styling, featuring expansive layouts, extra-length beds draped in billowing mosquito nets, and striking views that pull the outdoors in. And if you are lucky, you may be blessed by a visit from the resident elephant foraging through surrounding vegetation.

The true masterpiece of the guest quarters, however, is the private outdoor deck. Extending out over the river’s edge, it provides an uncompromised panorama of the national park on the opposite bank. If like me, you view wellness and reflection as a non-negotiable cornerstone of life, enjoying an outdoor shower from the deck or enjoying a cool beverage as the golden Zambian sunset bleeds across the water, is an exercise in pure, unhurried indulgence.
