To be perfectly honest, we didn’t really set out looking for a wellness safari. When my business partner, Sian, and I booked this particular lodge, we were chasing the same experiences we’ve always loved most—those heart-pounding, goosebump-inducing moments that only Africa can deliver. Think hyenas whooping in the dark, the elusive flick of a leopard’s tail, or the simple magic of sipping a gin and tonic as the sun slowly sets.
But life—and travel—has a knack of surprising you. This particular safari turned out to be something quite different, something far deeper and more restorative than we’d expected. Yes, there were exciting game drives and beautiful accommodation. But alongside these classic safari pleasures, we found ourselves experiencing infrared saunas, daring (or not quite daring) ice baths, soul-stirring sound therapy, and enjoying food that was fresh, healthy, and absolutely delicious.
This wasn’t some detox-in-disguise retreat. Instead, it was a soulful, full-bodied safari that kept adventure and indulgence firmly at its heart—yet with an added layer of thoughtful intention. Without quite realising it, we had stumbled into the centre of a growing trend: the wellness safari. And honestly, it was fantastic.

A Journey to Reconnect
At Marula Hill Travel, we’ve always believed the magic of travel lies not just in the destination, but in how it makes you feel. So, when we heard about a safari lodge seamlessly blending five-star wildlife experiences with serious wellness credentials, we knew we had to check it out ourselves.
Hidden among acacia trees in a private reserve, the lodge’s wellness sanctuary was beautifully unexpected yet perfectly in tune with its surroundings—a retreat beautifully positioned between winding riverbeds and wild bushveld.

Saunas, Sound Bowls, and a Dash of Bravery
Stepping into the wellness space felt more like entering a luxurious boutique spa than a traditional safari camp—yet it was unmistakably African. A state-of-the-art infrared sauna, an inviting Jacuzzi bubbling gently in the corner, and an intimidating plunge pool set at a bracing ten degrees Celsius all awaited us.
Now, despite my British roots and supposedly legendary tolerance for cold weather, I confess the ice bath was one step too far for me. Sian, ever the brave pragmatist, ventured up to her knees before gracefully retreating. We both agreed: huge respect to those courageous enough to go all in.
But the moment that we will remember the most was undoubtedly the sound healing session. Wrapped comfortably in thick towels, we lay as an expert therapist played crystal singing bowls, guiding us gently into profound relaxation. The vibrations seemed to ripple not only through our bodies but through the entire room. Outside, birds sang softly, the breeze whispered through the trees—and together, they formed an orchestra of natural healing.

Yoga with a Guru—And a View
Though we didn’t personally roll out yoga mats during our stay, our colleague did, and her experience still gives us goosebumps. Perched on a raised deck overlooking a waterhole, she practised yoga in a one-on-one session tailored precisely to her needs—breathing exercises to ground her, gentle stretches to ease jetlagged muscles. Guided by a yoga guru whose practice is deeply intertwined with the wilderness, she described the experience as absolutely incredible.
That’s what makes a wellness safari truly special—it isn’t a gimmick or afterthought. Instead, it’s thoughtfully woven into every moment. One minute you’re tracking lion footprints in the sand; the next, you’re breathing deeply as dawn colours the sky above you.

Food That Feeds, Not Fattens
Safari meals often lean towards indulgence, leaving you with wonderful memories—and perhaps an extra kilo or three. Not this time. Every meal felt vibrant, energising, and thoughtfully designed: grilled aubergines drizzled with tahini dressing, perfectly grilled line-caught fish, colourful salads bursting with flavour, and rich soups made from seasonal produce. Even the wine was carefully chosen—delicious, crisp, and refreshing—perfectly complementing each dish. And between meals, we sipped on smoothies so fresh and invigorating, they felt like wellness in a glass. We finished each meal feeling genuinely nourished, never lethargic. That, to us, was true luxury.
A New Definition of Luxury
What surprised us most was how seamlessly the wellness component integrated with the safari experience. There were no strict detox rules or sanctimonious speeches about healthy living—just gentle invitations to slow down, breathe deeper, and reconnect.
Luxury, we realise, isn’t solely defined by plush linens or fine wines (though we won’t turn either down). Increasingly, it’s about experiences that resonate deeply, adventures that move you, and memories that remain long after your return flight lands.

For Those Seeking More Than Just a Holiday
At Marula Hill Travel, we’ve noticed an undeniable shift. Guests are increasingly seeking experiences that enrich them beyond mere sightseeing. People want to feel calmer, lighter—transformed. The wellness safari perfectly suits those craving adventure, stillness, and an immersive reset from the pace of modern life.
Whether you’re honeymooners looking for moments of connection, a busy entrepreneur needing restoration, or simply someone ready to swap their inbox for peace, this experience is tailor-made for you.

Final Reflections
On our last morning, coffee cups warming our hands, we sat quietly on the deck. Dawn painted the sky in gentle shades of lavender and peach. Nearby, a hornbill called softly, and grasses rustled gently in the breeze.
We hadn’t intended to visit a wellness retreat. Yet we left profoundly rested, lighter, more balanced—more alive—than we had in a long time.
Because a wellness safari doesn’t just showcase Africa; it gently reconnects you with yourself.
And to us, that is the true future of luxury travel.
