In the world of luxury travel, and more so safari, a destination must offer more than five-star thread counts and infinity pools; it must offer a soul-stirring experience. It must transport you not just across continents, but deep into the very essence of its location. After years of exploring South Africa’s finest lodges,my first ever trip to the nation’s KwaZulu Natal Province unveiled to us the soul of Zulu-inspired hospitality, anchored by the globally renowned Jumeirah’s commitment to ensuring enriched moments at each turn…
Jumeirah Thanda Safari, nestled in the heart of Zululand and the second of two recent openings by Jumeirah in Africa, is a meticulously curated ode to conservation and Zulu culture, wrapped in the incomparable elegance Jumeirah is known for. My journey began with the all too familiar pulse of Dubai’s Terminal 3 Airport, a launchpad for what would be a near nine-hour flight that carried us into Durban’s King Shaka International Airport.

I was keen on discovering how Jumeirah had managed with this opening, to bridge the Gulf’s, European and Asian inspired sophistication for which its hotels and resorts are known, with Africa’s wild yet complex and often misunderstood heart. My anticipation was high.
The Jumeirah Thanda Safari experience began as soon as we cleared the standard immigration procedures upon arrival. Welcomed by our hosts who would drive us to our location in two of the Reserve’s luxury SUV fleet, I do have to say that the 3-hour transfer by road to follow came quite unexpectedly. I was delighted to note that an alternative helicopter ride to the Reserve is available for guests, and its take-off is subject to the international flight arrival time.
The three-hour road transfer into the vast, undulating landscapes of northern KwaZulu-Natal turned out to be far from a mere transit; it was a curated prologue. Inside our vehicle, a picnic basket filled with artisanal snacks and chilled champagne confirmed the high-end safari standard synonymous with Africa’s best lodges. As the urban world gradually shed away and the air became thicker with the scent of the ocean, into the darkness we drove, heading towards our destination, the exclusive 16,500-hectare private game reserve where safari luxury meets Zulu heritage.

Architecture of Immersion: Villas Inspired by Zulu Design
Because we arrived in the later hours of the night, our group settled in for a well-appreciated piping hot three-course meal after our welcome orientation, before we were whisked away to our individual private quarters. It was at this moment that the layout of the accommodations was unveiled in part.
The next morning shed light on why arriving at one of Thanda’s Royal Residences the night before, felt less like checking in and more like coming home—a supremely sophisticated, opulently furnished home. The accommodations manage to be both contemporary in decorative aesthetic yet deeply rooted in their environment by architectural design.
Jumeirah Thanda Safari’s Royal Residences are a collection of exclusive-use villas that redefine the term ‘safari home’. Ranging in size up to an immense 1,100 square metres, these two to five-bedroom sanctuaries, including the flagship Villa Thandawena, are architectural masterworks. The design philosophy is genius: contemporary grandeur anchored by the Zululand hilly landscape, with rounded hut-like exterior facades that form each bedroom. Most materials and decorative pieces throughout the villas have been sourced locally, contrasting beautifully with solid oak, marble accents, brass fittings and wall hangings
What one will notice is how each residence is strategically positioned on higher ground for absolute privacy. Within the reserve is a private helipad, and as a stealthy twin engine helicopter lifts off to soar above the Reserve, the cantilevered infinity pools adjoined to each villa’s vast veranda appear suspended over the hillside. You’ll love the inset jacuzzis and outdoor seating areas, with a winding pathway that leads to a boma set aside for exclusive alfresco dining by day or night. Complete with a private chef, butler service, and a dedicated safari vehicle, the Royal Residences offer a kingdom of seclusion and personalized luxury in the heart of the Reserve.

A Bespoke Culinary Odyssey: Plate, Fire, and Field
Culinary arts at Thanda Safari rise to meet the magnificence of the surroundings. For us as guests in the private villas, the experience did feel wholly bespoke and was curated by a dedicated team under the oversight of Chef Kevin Roehrig, Executive Chef at Dubai’s Jumeirah Mina Al Salam who joined us for this experience. Chef Roehrig’s sophisticated menu design is brilliantly complemented by the expertise of local South African chefs, who ensured that authentic, localized elements are woven into every course.
Our group indulged in a spectacular fireside dinner within the private boma of our villa, where the fusion of European technique and traditional South African braai (barbeque) was perfected under the stars. Equally memorable was the bush barbeque breakfast, appearing as a luxurious mirage in the open reserve after a crisp morning game drive, serving grilled meats, vegetables, your more traditional English breakfast finds, dips, breads and pastries to satisfy every craving. Our dining experiences invoked a spirit of distinctive collaboration, ensuring the dining was not just a meal, but a cultural and gourmet discovery.
On one evening after an adventure-filled sunset game drive, the sunset drink spot and quieter moments under a sky so densely scattered with stars it felt woven from diamonds, we returned to our villa, only to be ushered into our dinner experience by a pre-dinner show which featured traditional Zulu dancers. This moment, which all who were on this trip would agree, became that piece that connected us to the heart and soul of the Zulu cultural song, dance and spirit

The Unforgettable Pulse of Big Five Territory
The heart of any safari is the drive, and Jumeirah Thanda Safari, situated in a private reserve dedicated to the continent most prolific wildlife, delivers thrillingly. Our mornings began before the sun, spurred on by the promise of tracking lions, cheetahs and rhinos seen or heard hours before. The Reserve is known for its biodiversity, and the guides are masters of interpretation. I have gone on game drives into the hundreds across the continent’s vast expanse, but the measure for me of a good safari is one where guides don’t just find the animals in near record time; they narrate the story of the bush, teaching you to read the subtle signs: the flutter of a hornbill, the snapped twig, the warning cries of baboons or the distant territorial roar.
We were spoilt with sightings of rhinos on all our five days in the reserve, and two lions mating on the first morning. We watched as a rhino calf nudged its mother, the lowveld rising sun catching the dust kicked up by their enormous yet gentle feet, and the glistening of the savannah’s grass laden by morning dew. Silence of the numerous moments that followed was broken only by the click of one’s camera and the quiet, reverent whispers of our guide and tracker, who explained the critical role Jumeirah Thanda Safari plays in monitoring and protecting these animals. The emphasis on conservation here is palpable, turning every sighting for me, into a moment of gratitude and my growing respect for the natural world.
Beyond the rhinos, we also saw towers of giraffes and zebras in such proximity to our villa. Not a day passed without witnessing spotted necks dotted above the adjacent hillsides from the veranda, or dazzles of zebras grazing in the verdant terrains below. Sunset drives leading to our evening drink stop location were a procession of classic African drama. Between the laughter of our group onboard our comfortable game viewer, to the quieter moments as we went cheetah tracking, ours was a celebration of the genuine miracles that are found on a luxury safari experience. Jumeirah Thanda Safari not only boast the presence of the Big Five, but the intimate, unhurried manner in which they are viewed. There is no rush, only your pace and patience, allowing the natural behaviour of the animals to unfold before your eyes.

The Zulu Connection and Final Verdict
Jumeirah Thanda Safari’s commitment extends beyond wildlife to the local community, notably through its deep respect and celebration of the Zulu people. Guests can visit a local Zulu community, often a deeply enriching experience that provides insight into the history, traditions, and spirit of one of South Africa’s most vibrant cultures. This blend of conservation, culture, and high-end hospitality creates a holistic safari experience.

My final thoughts from my very first trip to South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal? In as much as my days were spent within the reserve’s borders, I left with the belief that Jumeirah Thanda Safari stands to seamlessly achieve balancing raw, untamed wilderness with superlative comfort. It is where you can spend a morning tracking a “Big Five” animal in the dust and return to a chilled glass of chardonnay and a gourmet meal served by staff who remember your favourite coffee order. It’s an investment in a journey that repays you not just with spectacular photographs, but with a renewed sense of purpose. For the discerning traveller seeking the authentic, luxurious heart of an African safari while in South Africa, Jumeirah Thanda Safari truly lives up to its name—it is a place of love for the land, the wildlife, and the unforgettable journey that awaits you.
