Words by Yvonne C Mtengwa

It’s an oasis of tranquillity set in the heart of the Okavango Delta, one of Africa’s most prolific UNESCO World Heritage sites. Renowned for its breathtaking beauty and abundant wildlife, we were to discover just how much Wilderness Vumbura Plains is an unparalleled escape for those seeking respite and immersion in nature, during our 6-night, 3-camp stay across part of Wilderness’ portfolio in Botswana.  With our second stop taking us across the skies over the Okavango in a 12-seater charter also operated by Wilderness, excitement was palatable and energy vibrant as we braced for yet another stay in the throngs of Botswana’s landscapes.

Because Wilderness Jao had pulled out all the stops in awarding my dear friend Taku and I an experience of a lifetime, it was quite difficult to imagine how our senses could be further heightened. And elevated they were. The first steps onto the walkway leading to Vumbura Plains’ main area unveiled this luxurious camp’s harmonious blend of contemporary design and rustic charm, creating an ambiance that was both invigorating and deeply relaxing the minute we arrived.

Unpacking the design

The camp’s design is a masterful interplay of form and function, where every element is carefully considered to enhance the guest experience. Elevated on wooden decks, the spacious flat-roofed wooden-walled seemingly floating suites, offer an intimate connection with the surrounding wilderness. Large, open-air living areas seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing guests to bask in the beauty of the Delta while enjoying the comforts of home. The use of natural materials such as brown woods, turquoise and gold-coloured decorative ornaments make up the earthy tones, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that complements the camp’s idyllic setting.

Refreshed quite recently, Vumbura’s various new design elements truly pay homage to nature, and how one has a unique opportunity to soak up the surrounding wilderness, somewhat being enveloped by patterns, textures and colours that bring nature inside. During the refurb, all furniture and interiors were replaced or enhanced to honour the natural surrounds. While significant upgrades improved the camp’s structure, Vumbura’s (gentle) footprint continues to reflect the immense space of the wilderness area. Making the most of the large, airy suites – including two of the most sizeable family units in the Delta – the improved doors and windows take full advantage of the horizon-wide views.

A sense of space, privacy and nature

Privacy is paramount at Vumbura Plains. Each suite is thoughtfully positioned to ensure seclusion, providing guests with a sanctuary where they can truly unwind. A private walkway leads you to a gate to your quarters, where upon walking through, the use of space before you unveils an open plan structure with mesh and canvas walling that blurs the lines between the inside, the serene waters and marsh beyond the structure. The private plunge pools, nestled amidst the natural landscape, are an invitation to indulge in moments of pure relaxation. As you immerse yourself in the cool, refreshing water, you’ll be captivated by the ever-changing panorama of wildlife that unfolds before you, with hippos often seen venturing in to indulge in the verdant grasses surrounding the suites.

Community and sustainability and the heart of Vumbura Plains

We were to learn as we ventured on our culinary escapades that significant effort was made to ensure cohesion between the opening of the newly refurbed camp, and a revitalised menu that is now even more closely aligned with traditional local fare. Many of its scrumptious dining options we enjoyed were not only a celebration of the delicious local, seasonal ingredients of the region, but were also an ode to local traditions and Wilderness’ partnerships with the local farmers, suppliers and artisans. Ingredients are purchased locally, thereby reducing the food miles inherent in every meal, and providing neighbouring communities with an alternative revenue stream.

The camp’s commitment to sustainability is also evident in every aspect of its design and operation. Solar power and energy-efficient systems minimize the camp’s environmental impact, while the use of local materials and craftsmanship supports the community. This eco-conscious approach allows guests to enjoy their stay with a clear conscience, knowing that they are contributing to the preservation of this pristine wilderness.

We also learned that the 60 000-hectare Vumbura Plains Private Wilderness Area is leased from five villages, through the Okavango Community Trust (OCT), a partnership that spans 20 successful years of impactful conservation tourism in the area. The benefits of revenue generation, job creation, and alternative sources of income are shared with its neighbouring rural stakeholders. The camp’s design celebrates this core purpose and partnership with the OCT, with thoughtful detail and bespoke pieces applied throughout the camp to celebrate its sense of place and culture

A floating sanctuary on the Delta

Taku and I were intentional about slowing down time to truly recalibrate from the weeks that had led to this vacation. With our minds wired for reflection and our suites providing all the elements that made it quite difficult to leave our space, to us, beyond the physical environment, Vumbura Plains offered a sanctuary for the mind and soul. The gentle rhythm of life in the Delta, punctuated by the calls of distant wildlife, created a soothing soundscape that lulls guests into a state of deep relaxation. The camp’s dedicated staff was equally committed to providing exceptional service, anticipating our every need and creating a personalized experience for which Wilderness is known.

Feedback from other guests who ventured out of camp at every opportunity was that from early morning game drives to tranquil boat excursions, the activities on offer at Vumbura Plains were designed to rejuvenate and inspire. Our drive into camp, and as we explored the vast expanse of the Delta during one afternoon’s sunset game drive, we encountered a breathtaking array of wildlife, including elephants, lions basking under the shade of shrubbery, a large pack of wild dogs on a hunt and countless bird species. The opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was truly awe-inspiring.

As the days drew to a close, we returned to the camp to savour delicious meals prepared with fresh, local ingredients. As we dined under the star-studded African sky in the company of other guests who too had come in from countries far and wide, Taku and l felt a profound sense of peace, contentment and appreciation of the opportunity to enjoy a girls’ trip that had long been talked about and finally came to life.
