Words by Yvonne C Mtengwa

Cape Town, Africa’s Mother City, and the ultimate southernmost metropolis on the continent, remains home to some of the most inspired stately homes and manors, designed to welcome epicureans from far and wide for pockets of relaxation, fine dining and appreciation of abounding nature at each turn. Built amidst the rolling vineyards of Constantia, Nova Constantia Boutique Residence is more than just a place to stay; it’s an experience. A sanctuary of simple sophistication, the villa offers an escape from the ordinary, inviting guests to indulge in a world of understated luxury and unparalleled comfort.

With beautiful blue skies to welcome me after a week-long trek across the savannah woodlands of Sabi Sands Nature Reserve, I looked forward to touching down in a city that promises nothing but an energetic buzz, distinctive dining options, art-inspired and adventure-focused experiences for those with a zest for living the high life. My fourth stay during my 10-day circuit through boutique hotels in Cape Town’s Victoria & Albert Waterfront District and Constantia, would have me arrive at Nova Constantia Boutique Residence, a darling private villa, managed by the ever so vibrant and socially gregarious Lee Dicks.

From the moment I arrived, the allure of Nova Constantia was undeniable. The villa’s architecture is a harmonious blend of contemporary design and classic elegance, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors framing breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and vineyards a further distance away, easily blurring the lines between indoors and out. The sound of the indoor water feature was music to my ears, slowing the pace of life down as I absorbed what was within my eyeshot as I met the hosting team.

Upon check in, I was taken on a quick tour around the villa, with the outdoor patio and sparkling pool beckoning for an afternoon of relaxation after a light lunch. The interiors of the suite assigned to me turned out to be a study in understated luxury, with clean lines, neutral tones accentuated by plush turquoise and tan pillows and throws strewn across my majestic, “fit-for-a-queen” king bed. Exquisite furnishings throughout the villa certainly create a serene and inviting atmosphere for guests checking in for a night or more, and do invoke a sense of carefree rest, with panoramic views of the rolling hills beyond the property’s secure walls.

The heart of Nova Constantia

Extensive travel has revealed to me that boutique hotels can sometimes feel dated or crowded with decorative pieces placed within somewhat confined, dimly lit spaces. But at Nova Constantia, natural light beams through the heart of the villa, an open-plan living area that is a spacious as it is light-filled, making the space perfect for relaxation or quiet entertainment. Plush sofas invite guests to curl up with a good book or enjoy a glass of wine while taking in the stunning views. The modern yet modest kitchen comes fully equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, serving up hearty breakfasts and a selection of gourmet sandwiches, wraps and other light bites throughout the day.

Beyond Nova Constantia’s walls

But it’s not just the villa itself that makes Nova Constantia so special. The surrounding area offers a wealth of experiences to explore. I joined the many wine lovers in their element, taking tours of some of the world-renowned vineyards just a short drive away. With the knowledge that Constantia Valley is home to some of South Africa’s finest wineries, opportunities to taste award-winning wines, learn about the winemaking process, and enjoy picnics amidst the vines are abundant, and I for one would never miss out on any occasion to do so while in Cape Town.

For those seeking adventure, the Cape Peninsula is a playground of possibilities. I had previously hiked through the rugged beauty of Table Mountain National Park, and on many trips before explored the charming coastal towns of Hout Bay and Camps Bay. On this circuit, and because I had truly embarked on peregrinations across part of South Africa, Cape Town would be my last stop to truly recuperate from a rigorous itinerary but do so in a setting that awarded a cosmopolitan mix of culture, history, and nightlife.

Why you’ll love Nova Constantia Boutique Residence

The true magic of Nova Constantia lies in its ability to offer a sense of complete seclusion and tranquility. The villa’s private pool and outdoor entertainment area were a perfect setting for the lazy days spent soaking up the sometimes-elusive Capetonian sun, enjoying my glasses of wine as I churned through lighter bodies of work from my laptop.

Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a retreat for a group of friends, Nova Constantia offers an unparalleled experience. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, allowing guests to truly unwind and reconnect with the soul of Cape Town’s Constantia neighbourhood.
