Words by Yvonne C Mtengwa

Makokola Retreat, a shimmering jewel on the shores of Lake Malawi, is more than just a luxury resort. It’s a testament to a family’s unwavering commitment to hospitality and a love affair with one of Africa’s most pristine landscapes. The retreat’s story is intertwined with the history of tourism in Malawi, a narrative of passion, innovation, and a deep-rooted connection to the land.

With the blessing of a remarkable opportunity to finally discover Africa’s warm heart, a sunrise start had us drive down the long winding road from Malawi’s Zomba Mountain Plateau where my tour, courtesy of Malawi’s Tourism Authority, had begun. My dedicated hosts ensured that I was kept engaged, providing me with an array of facts with each key district we drove through as we headed towards Mangochi, a town in South Central Malawi. Mangochi, I came to understand, was home to an iconic holiday retreat for locals and international guests alike, who carried a penchant for luxurious hospitality in settings invoking an appreciation of the finer moments that life can award.

Affectionately coined by Malawi’s residents as “Club Mak” – it soon became clear as we drove through the main gate and past the resort’s private, international airport, why I had heard so much about the family owned and managed Makokola Retreat within my first few hours of arriving in the country. About a 200-meter stretch of tarred road took us to the resort’s main entrance area, where we were ushered in by strikingly picturesque surroundings and beaming smiles that were clearly excited to have me at the location. One always recognises a warm welcome, and this one was certainly a special one. With a cooling towel in hand and a refreshing sip of fresh lemon juice infused with mint, I embraced the stunning views that lay before me while activating a mood fitting for such pristine settings…

The epitome of luxury on Lake Malawi’s shore

Spectacularly green, exceptionally manicured gardens dotted with water features and man-made ponds form the grounds on which the resort sits, with the vast expanse of Lake Malawi’s blue waters equally setting the pristine scenery that envelopes you at the location. Makokola Retreat is a brilliant showcase of a fine, family-owned hospitality establishment, that reveals spacious suites and rooms perched along the shores of Southern Lake Malawi.

Upon check in, I was whisked away to my lake-facing suite, set only a few steps away from the Presidential Villa, which I was soon to learn, often hosts Africa’s statesmen during official visits to Malawi, as well as local and international celebrities keen on carving out a few days of escapism at a destination that offers unrivalled service, while capturing the essence of African design, culture and tradition. Somewhat rested a short while after, and eager to explore the vast resort and soak up the natural beauty around me, barefoot and curious, I took a stroll to the beach bar, which would be my place of work and rest for the remainder of my first afternoon in.

Makokola Retreat is located on the palm fringed southern shore of Lake Malawi, a setting that is beautiful almost beyond belief. Fisherman from nearby villages can be seen traversing the waters adjacent to the resort at all intervals of the day, with the sight of their traditional dhows awarding a postcard photo-opportunity of their silhouettes against the lake’s sparkling waters, also the habitat of more species of fish than that of any other body of fresh water on the earth. You’ll see a host of bird and flora species all around, a reminder that you are in fact spending a few days in one of Africa’s most biodiverse regions.

Opulent accommodations that blend perfectly with nature

Nestled along the shores of Lake Malawi, Makokola Retreat offers a haven of tranquillity and sophistication. This exquisite resort is renowned for its luxurious accommodations, world-class amenities, and breathtaking natural beauty. If I were to describe what my first sense was as a guest arriving at the resort, I would emphasise how guests are greeted by a stunning blend of contemporary architecture and rustic charm.

The resort’s villas and cottages are thoughtfully designed to harmonize with the surrounding landscape, featuring spacious interiors adorned with local art and warm, earthy tones that form decorative pieces made locally and with the use of as many natural, also locally sourced materials as possible.  Whether you choose a standard room or opulent suite, rest assured that each accommodation is equipped with modern conveniences, including air conditioning, a private terrace or balcony, and en-suite bathrooms with luxurious amenities.

Unparalleled services and amenities to remember

Makokola Retreat offers a range of indulgent services to cater to every guest’s needs. The resort’s spa is a sanctuary of relaxation, offering a variety of treatments including massages, facials, and body wraps. Experienced therapists utilize natural ingredients sourced from the local region to provide rejuvenating and soothing experiences. For those seeking a more active vacation, the resort’s fitness center is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, allowing guests to maintain their workout routines while on holiday.

The resort’s dining options are equally impressive. The main restaurant serves a delicious selection of international and local cuisine, prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Guests can enjoy their meals on the terrace, overlooking the picturesque lake and lush gardens. For a more intimate dining experience, the resort’s private dining room is available for special occasions. And for me, I quite loved splitting my time between Il Lago Restaurant and Coffee Lounge by morning, and casual relaxation at the beachside pool bar I had discovered a few steps away from the private patio to my suite. Mornings were strikingly bright with a fresh breeze combatting the humid atmosphere, and evening sunsets were fit for a postcard, and a perfect way to marvel in the beauty of nature.

Activities to entice the entire family

Makokola Retreat offers a variety of activities to ensure that guests have a memorable stay. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Malawi. The resort’s dive center provides opportunities for certified divers to explore the vibrant underwater world, teeming with colourful fish and coral reefs. For those seeking adventure on land, the resort can arrange guided hikes and nature walks or take on a round of golf at the Resort’s Mlambe Golf Club.

With an array of activities to choose from, I was enticed by an opportunity to enjoy a boat ride to a small island adjacent to the resort, where we would embark on an educational experience that encompassed feeding fish eagles, before taking a swim in Lake Malawi, nibbling on sumptuous treats and toasting to the good life over a glass of prosecco. Makokola Retreat is renowned for its impeccable service, and I was one such guest who will recount how very personalised each of my excursions, relaxation and dining experiences were during my stay. The resort’s friendly and attentive staff are truly dedicated to ensuring that every guest has an unforgettable experience that features personalized service and attention to detail.

A tale of legacy and passion at Makokola Retreat

At the heart of Makokola lies a legacy spanning generations. The owning family has been instrumental in shaping Malawi’s tourism industry, pioneering luxury experiences in a country renowned for its natural beauty. Their vision was to create a haven where guests could immerse themselves in the tranquillity of Lake Malawi while enjoying world-class amenities and impeccable service. Makokola Retreat is the culmination of this dream.

From sourcing elements of the resort’s interiors which are a tasteful fusion of contemporary elegance and traditional Malawian motifs, employing members from the neighbouring lakeside villages to work at the Golf Course, the Nursery and at the resort, creating opportunities for craftsman and artisans to sell their wares to guests staying at Makokola, as well as sourcing produce also grown locally for the chef’s creations, all aspects of the Makokola experience have been carefully curated by the owning family over the years, unveiling for the guests, a harmonious experience ambiance that reflects the spirit of the place and her people.

I found Makokola Retreat to be more than just a luxury destination; but rather an embodiment of the Malawian spirit, and the owning family’s passion for building a lasting legacy for generations. The warm hospitality, the breathtaking natural beauty, and the unwavering commitment to excellence create an experience that lingers long after departure.
