I was fortunate to not be on this trip solo, and so truly got to appreciate the appeal of Babohi by Newmark as a prime destination for couples looking to elevate their bond through a unique safari experience. Situated amidst the breathtaking scenery of Qwabi Private Game Reserve in South Africa, Babohi by Newmark isn’t just a luxury lodge; it’s a sanctuary crafted for an unforgettable romantic escape.

Ours was an unparalleled blend of exclusivity, rejuvenating wellness practices, and exquisite attention to detail, all designed to reignite the spark and create lasting memories for couples on an adventure together.

Babohi’s very essence whispers intimacy. Stepping away from the traditional lodge layout, it features individual villas, each a private haven for two. Designed with discerning couples in mind, the villas are a masterpiece of modern sophistication seamlessly woven with the beauty of the South African landscape. Earthy tones with touches of royal blue and golds in the furniture, rich wooden finishes, and warm fabrics create a sense of comfort and belonging. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer uninterrupted panoramic views of the savannah right outside your space, as if one could simply stretch their hand to touch it. My early mornings were warm and spent watching the gentle African sunrise from our king size bed, with a steaming cup of coffee later enjoyed from the private patio overlooking the woodland, and the symphony of chirping birdlife serenading our every moment.

At Babohi by Newmark, romance extends beyond the breathtaking setting. The lodge’s renowned culinary team weaves a tapestry of flavours in each dish, showcasing the best of South African cuisine with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Exquisitely curated menus present a fusion of tradition and innovation, with every dish a delectable journey for the palate. We loved our intimate candlelit dinners from the main lodge, seemingly hoisted up and floating above the vast valley below. Sunsets were mesmerising from this vantage point, and if it’s a nightcap of Amarula or Bourbon you are looking for post dinner, the bonfire setting down below is perfect to ease you into the remainder of your evening.
Beyond what magic is being delivered from the chef’s kitchen, Babohi also prioritizes your holistic well-being. “The introduction of wellness offerings at regular touchpoints along the Newmark customer journey is a key strategic focus for us,” says Neil Markovitz, CEO of Newmark Hotels & Reserves. “Consumers are more aware of the links between physical and mental health, and this is driving the rise of wellness as a consumer value,” he adds.
Babohi spared no expense with its on-site spa, which offers a haven of relaxation for all who step through its doors. Featuring a variety of treatments designed to soothe the mind, body, and soul, we were encouraged to indulge in rejuvenating massages, aromatherapy treatments, or a revitalizing body wrap, all using natural products inspired by Africa’s rich botanical heritage. The call to choose between the spa experience and being out on a game viewer in the throngs of the wild was a hard one to make, as both certainly promised a time to reconnect and unwind, soaking up the wonders of the reserve together. We opted for both, the “African massage” that comes with navigating the vast terrain on the back of a game viewer, followed by pampering at the spa that brought on heightened relaxation after a morning out on game drive.
Embracing the allure of nature
Qwabi Private Game Reserve boasts an incredible diversity of wildlife, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure-seeking couples. Expertly guided game drives in open-air vehicles take you into the heart of the reserve, where you can witness the majestic grace of lions, the beauty of a dazzle of zebras or the swimming of hippos as they penetrate the surface of watering holes throughout the reserve. A special treat for us was the sighting of the very rare white rhinoceros with her young resting under an acacia tree. Shortly thereafter it was a coffee stop at a viewing deck on the banks of a small stream, where we watched animals emerge from the savannah for their morning fill of water.
Beyond the traditional yet exciting game drive, Babohi by Newmark offers a variety of activities that will further enrich your romantic escape. Because you enjoy the luxury of time with your designated guide and hosting team, you can opt for a luxurious bush breakfast or dinner, where you can learn about the hidden wonders of the reserve and the intricate ecosystem over delicious servings from the kitchen.
Still time further by sitting on your balcony after dinner for a little uninterrupted stargazing session. Nestled away from light and sound pollution, it is breathtakingly quiet out there at the Qwabi Private Game Reserve, awarding you an opportunity to potentially enjoy a celestial spectacle.
